LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — As past American Idol contestants have showed us, you don’t have to win to become a star.

But that didn’t stop the final two — Jessica Sanchez and Phillip Phillips — from vying for the title tonight.

Fans cast more than 132 million votes for their favorite performer.

And in the end, Phillips took the trophy.

Tonight’s two-hour finale included performances by Rihanna, and even J-Lo got on the other side of the judges table.

Phillips took the stage for a duet with Creedence Clearwater Revival’s John Fogerty.

Then Sanchez paired up with Jennifer Holiday for a powerful display of their belting skills.

Phillips is the 11th winner of American Idol.
